Viktor Koltsov demonstrated Metso DNA to Mr Konstantin Kuchevasov from OJSC Aviadvigatel, Perm.

Metso has been present on the Russian market for over forty years and in 1996 founded a subsidiary now known as ZAO Metso Automation. In 2010, the net sales amounted to MEUR 32.3. To date, Metso has delivered more than 200 automation systems to Russia

“The demand for automation systems is continuously growing due to the increasing efficiency and sustainability demands. With reliable, user-friendly Metso DNA solutions, the customers have tools to better tackle these challenges,” says Larisa Marnacheva, Regional Vice President, Metso Automation, Process Automation Systems, Sales & Services, CIS.

The information management systems, in turn, provide automatic reporting and data transfer to the user’s network, for example, about power production, gas consumption, etc. This information is useful both for the management in their decision-making and for the operators, who have access to all the necessary information in handling both normal and disturbance situations.

Metso’s solutions have complete compliance with Russian norms and standards with the necessary certificates and approvals. Documentation and operator interfaces are in Russian. Also, the staff at Metso’s Service and Projects departments is fluent in Russian to make communication easy.

Long-term cooperation with customers

Metso’s cooperation with many of its oil & gas customers dates back to several decades; it has lasted over the whole life cycle of the equipment and continued with new-generation systems.

OJSC Surgutneftegas plant in Russia.

Surgutneftegaz
Surgutneftegaz is today the leading Russian oil company in terms of associated petroleum gas (APG) utilization.
This form of natural gas that originates as a by-product in oil production has always been dealt with either by flaring, venting or using it.
The flaring of APG is controversial as it has great environmental implications by being a source of global warming. It is also economically wasteful as APG can be used as fuel for local power generation, just as Surgutneftegas does by using Metso’s automation technology.
For example, cooperation with OJSC Surgutneftegas, one of the largest oil and gas producers in Russia, began in 1999 when Metso first started supplying automation systems to the company’s compressor stations and later to its gas turbine power plants, bitumen plants, gas processing stations and booster compressor stations. To date, Metso has delivered about 50 complete automation systems to the company’s various oil fields in Siberia.

Additionally, Metso has supplied numerous Metso DNA automation systems, valves and field instruments during the past decades to Rosneft, one of the leading petrochemical companies in Russia.

Valves play an important role in Russian oil refineries

Metso’s installed base of flow control solutions is large, especially at the Orenburg and Astrakhan sites. The Neles, Jamesbury and Mapag product offering fits well to the oil & gas needs in Russia.

In the Russian oil refinery business, there is a huge amount of investments coming over the next ten years: This well supports the strategy actions of Metso’s Flow Control business line. Metso has been cooperating with Gazprom, Gazpromneft and SIBUR companies, among others, during the past 10 to15 years. In 2011, there were also deliveries to Transneft.

New order from SIBUR
Recently Metso received a new order from its other major customer in Russia, SIBUR, to deliver a Metso DNA automation system to its APG treatment plant in Muravlenko, Siberia. The customer will modernize and expand the plant. Metso’s delivery scope will also include an information management system, field device configuration and monitoring tools.
“During the past five to eight years we have been expanding our sales force in Russia and moving the Helsinki-based sales support activities to St. Petersburg where we have a good new office closer to our main customers,” says Timo Torvinen, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Flow Control business line.

One of the reasons to keep the valve production in Finland was also the closeness of the huge Russian and CIS valve markets which are easy to support from Helsinki, where the new Hakkila facility can even better serve the Russian oil & gas customers.

Cooperation with Tyumen State Oil and Gas University

For over ten years, Metso has closely cooperated with Tyumen State Oil and Gas University that has about 60,000 students in 70 departments. The university provides training to its students in a class room fully equipped with the Metso DNA system. The system is also used for customer training, as there are three Metso employees working there too. The students and university staff have also taken part in some real projects.
