Integrated Drive Controls

Integrated Drive Controls combine control software, operator interface and engineering configuration of electric drives into one comprehensive package based on Metso DNA distributed network of applications. Now, drive controls are integrated into the same control system together with machine controls, process controls and quality controls. Integrated Drive Controls can be used both with sectional drives and single drives.

So far, drive control systems and process control systems have been separate and distinct systems. With the previous "single window" concept, systems were integrated only on the operator interface level. There was a significant redundancy of hardware, multiple data links between systems and separate engineering configuration skills were required.

Now, with Metso’s Integrated Drive Controls, the control logic, interlocks, tension controls, diagnostics, alarms, operator interfaces and engineering functions are combined into one network - the Metso DNA. Drives are connected to Metso DNA via Profibus DP interface which gives Metso DNA access to all the required control and diagnostics data in the drives. Profibus DP is a standard, high-speed interface which is available from all major drive suppliers. Even drives of different brands can be connected on the same bus.

Operators are presented with a familiar and consistent interface through which they can perform all drive control and process control functions.

Benefits of Integrated Drive Control
  • Easy to operate due to uniform and effective operator interface.
  • Engineering configuration is streamlined with a single, name-based configuration language and uniform documentation.
  • Hardware redundancy is eliminated and there is a single set of spare parts. These advantages, plus the engineering efficiencies, result in long term maintenance savings.
  • There are no separate data links between separate systems.
  • Open diagnostics allow quick problem identification and solutions. There are no more black boxes.

Operation

In the Metso DNA network, drive controls as well as other process control functions, engineering configuration and operator interface activities are distributed on common Metso DNA platforms.

Operator interface functions, drive controls, drive system diagnostics and alarms are executed by Metso DNA process control stations. The engineering configuration activities are managed through the Engineering Activity Station (EAS).

Operator Interface

With latest Metso DNA features, the operator interface is fast and intuitive. Operators click on buttons on the display to access diagnostics windows.

Diagnostic windows show the interlocks, drive faults and alarms associated with each drive section and identify the original cause of a process halt. Unexpected process halts are quickly diagnosed and corrected.

Function descriptions and function block diagrams of the software of each drive section can be accessed directly on operator display to help operators and also maintenance personnel to learn interactively about control functions and how to diagnose problems.Operators can even document operating experiences directly on the operator station and share their knowledge with other operators as well as management.
