Metso automation solution to boost performance at Billerud Beetham, UK

Metso has been awarded a contract by Billerud Beetham Limited for the replacement of the control system and the quality control system of PM2 at Waterhouse Mills, Beetham, Cumbria, United Kingdom.

Following a thorough evaluation of available automation technology and vendors, Billerud Beetham decided to invest in the latest technology Distributed Control System (DCS) and Quality Control System (QCS) from Metso. This investment will improve process control, system reliability and end product quality. The Metso solution was chosen not only because of its excellent customer references and proven reliability, but also because of the extensive knowledge of the paper process that Metso has developed over many decades. Metso IQ systems are expected to be easier to service, which was also a key factor in the selection criteria.

Metso IQ integrates process quality management, measurements and profile controls resulting in faster start-ups and grade changes, reduced dryer breaks and better runnability.

The Metso IQ QCS will be supplied with three scanners and six sensors including on-line Porosity; Machine Direction Controls; Cross Direction Control of Basis Weight; project management; training; and commissioning.

Delivery will take place in October 2012 with start-up in November 2012.

Billerud Beetham Limited is part of the Billerud group, a world-leading supplier of packaging paper, operating pulp and paper mills in Sweden and the UK.
