Upgraded 13½ inch plugscrew with FeedMax™
A screw feeder upgraded with a FeedMax provides uniform feeding, optimized dewatering and therefore reduced energy consumption in the dryer. Therefore, this concept is the optimal answer for upgrading various fiber processes.
Important to choose the right equipment
Different processes have different requirements. In some applications dewatering is the most important parameter, while in others very uniform feeding is essential. The main factors that can be influenced by choice can be summarized as follows:
- capacity
- energy consumption
- feeding stability
- lifetime
- dewatering
The upgrade consists of a LongLasting screw and a DewateringPlugPipe. These two components are often sold as a unit because the screw’s gradient and compression is adapted to enable using a dewatering plug pipe.
LongLasting screw
The LongLasting screw is cast and heat treated to produce a very durable material. This type of screw is suitable for applications where maximum lifetime is required. This screw is not repairable. Price and wear resistance are its benefits – a lifetime that is as much as three times longer than conventional screws.
Conventional screws and screw pipes typically last 3 to 4 months. After one year the LongLasting screw and screw pipe were inspected and no significant wear could be detected.
DewateringPlugPipe
This product extends the dewatering zone and to achieve better dewatering. Choosing a Dewatering PlugPipe means that the screw cover has to be rebuilt to collect the water drained from the plug pipe.
Removing more water from chips before refining affects drying. The temperature in the dryer was reduced from 220 to 170°C.
Low energy segments in AttackBar design
The decreased dryer load, as a result of the FeedMax installation, enabled room for improvement also in the defibration stage. Therefore, low energy segments of AttackBar design were installed at Balabanovo, contributing to the overall cost savings.
Energy consumption in the Defibration stage at the plant was decreased with approximately 18% after installation of the new AttackBar segments.
AttackBar
AttackBar design is an add-on feature which can be applied on all of Metso’s unidirectional segments. The segment bars are tilted towards the direction of rotation for prolonged bar sharpness, and the special geometry also keeps the segment grooves cleaner. The result is longer segment life at lower energy consumption.
