Disc gap control for SD refiners
For saving energy in refining.
The new disc-gap control available for all SD refiner technology has been developed to meet gap control needs now and in the future to ensure optimum refining and energy savings.
The major cost item in mechanical pulp production is energy consumption of the refiners. Metso’s low-energy Turbine Segments technology offers significant energy savings in mechanical pulp refining. The Turbine Segments operate with a small disc gap that sets new demands for accurate gap control.
Accurate and constant gap control
Current SD refiner disc-gap control is based on power or specific energy measurements and calculations. This principle is adequate, if the process remains the same and refiner is operated with a large disc gap (> 1 mm). When low-energy segment technology is used, the disc gap decreases and becomes the most significant refiner operating parameter. In such cases, a gap control based on real gap measurement is the only reliable and accurate control principle.
The Metso disc-gap control measurement for SD refiners is based on the same proven technology that has been used in Metso’s RGP refiners. The disc gap is measured with an Adjustable Gap Sensor (AGS) that includes a True Disc Clearance (TDC) sensor. The AGS sensor is calibrated during production, which eliminates segment and sensor wearing as well as rotor disc bending.
